Bucida buceras (Combretaceae) is commonly called “Pucté” by the locals of Petén. It grows in areas that receive less than 2000mm of annual precipitation with a dry season from November to March and an average annual atmospheric temperature between 24-28 °C. Pucté grows best in nutrient-rich soils that are deep, medium in texture and moist but well drained, but it is also found in low ground and seasonally swampy and along intermittent streams at the foot of dry hills. Usually grows in seaside, but sometimes can grow at several hundred meters in dry coastal hills (Francis, 1989).
The wood of Pucté is very appreciated and it is also used as fuel.
